My Commitment
I want this website to be usable by as many people as possible. Accessibility is not an afterthought here. It is part of how the site is built, from the ground up.
What This Site Does
Semantic HTML
Every page uses proper heading hierarchy, landmark regions (header, nav, main, footer), and meaningful HTML elements. Screen readers can navigate by headings, sections, and links.
Keyboard Navigation
All pages include a "Skip to content" link that becomes visible on focus. Every interactive element (links, buttons, the mobile menu) is reachable and operable with a keyboard alone. No mouse required.
Whatever has keyboard focus is drawn with a clearly visible ring, so you always know where you are. The mobile menu closes on Escape and hands focus back to the button that opened it.
Screen Readers
Navigation menus include ARIA labels. Buttons describe their purpose. The language attribute is set on every page so screen readers use the correct pronunciation for English and French content.
Contrast
Text and background color combinations are chosen to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA contrast ratios: at least 4.5:1 for body text, and at least 3:1 for large or bold text and for the borders that outline a button. An automated test checks every one of these pairings before any change to the site goes live, in all four combinations of light or dark appearance and standard or increased contrast.
Links inside body text are underlined as well as colored, so they are never signalled by color alone.
Text Size
Type is set in relative units rather than fixed pixels, so the site follows the text size you have chosen in your browser or operating system. At 200% larger text, nothing is clipped and no sideways scrolling appears.
Touch and Pointer Targets
Buttons, menu items and footer links are at least 44 by 44 pixels — the minimum size Apple recommends — with enough space between them that neighbouring controls are hard to hit by mistake.
Dark Mode
The site opens in its light appearance for everyone. If you would rather read it dark, the button in the navigation bar switches it, and your choice is remembered on this device as you move between pages. The dark palette is not a filter over the light one: it is its own set of colors, held to the same contrast minimums.
System Accessibility Settings
The site responds to the accessibility settings you have already chosen. With Reduce Motion turned on, smooth scrolling is switched off. With Increase Contrast turned on, text and borders are strengthened and navigation links are underlined — in the light and the dark appearance alike.
Responsive Design
The site works on screens of all sizes. Text scales with browser zoom settings. Layouts adapt without requiring horizontal scrolling.
Known Limitations
This site has not been formally audited by a third-party accessibility specialist. I have applied accessibility best practices throughout, but there may be gaps I have not caught yet.
If you encounter something that does not work for you, I genuinely want to know about it.
